It seems that virtually every media publication, tweet, talk show and blog post… is talking about Erin Andrews, Dancing With The Stars, recent foot mishap regarding her spray tan (or lack of). Usually not one to buy into such menial ‘news’, I decided on this occasion to break my silence.

For no reason other than to save alot of suffering at the hands of harsh chemicals and exfoliating gloves (excuse the pun) I highly recommend ‘SluffWipes’ for anyone who has regular spray tans or issues in removing sunless tan products. They’re also great for tidying up any areas where the spray tan technician has been a little heavy handed.

Designed specifically for removing spray tan from the skin, SluffWipes are impregnated with a chemical solution to combat spray tan residue. Each wipe has a smooth side and also a rough side for exfoliating. SluffWipes are disposable and the recommendation on the pack is to use 2 wipes per person when removing spray tan from the skin surface. RRP is $34.95 – for stockists or to buy online go to sluffwipes.com.au. I think they’re available in the US also because the box that mine came in had a NY address.

There are millions of other concoctions that people have posted to websites, most including bi-carb, lemon juice and alot of scrubbing but as a self-confessed spray tan junkie I’ve tried alot of them and trust me this is easier (and alot less painful).

Some spray tan solutions are also known offenders of fading patchy – TechnoTan is one of my preferred solutions for this one reason. Another thing i find is that generally the lighter the spray tan colour, the more naturally it fades.

In addition, my recommendation while sporting your spray tan is to moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! I usually put a small amount of apricot oil in my bathwater because it’s so much easier than rubbing moisturiser all over the body plus while you’re in hot water your pores are open so it’s not only great for your spray tan but nourishing for your deeper dermal layers also.

Below are some basic tips on how to maintain your spray tan:

Always wear loose, dark coloured clothing after the initial application while the colour is developing on your skin. Avoid wearing tight clothing such as jeans, socks, bra, tights, watch, sneakers etc.

Do not apply moisturiser, deodorant or foundation until after your first shower.

Avoid sitting on particularly porous surfaces such as suede, leather, pale fabrics etc as staining may occur.

While your spray tan is developing before your first shower, avoid any physical exercise, heat or other situations where you may sweat. Also avoid situations where you may potentially get wet as both of these factors can affect the outcome of your spray tan while it is developing. If this does occur, pat the affected area lightly with a clean, dry cloth – usually your tan will be unaffected and just the surface bronzers will appear blemished but the actual result will be indicated after showering.

After your first shower if you notice any problem areas, rehydrate the ‘Sluff Wipe’ that has been provided by your technician and gently wipe the affected area with the smooth side of the wipe. The rough side is perfect for exfoliating any stubborn areas when your tan is in its final days.

Your spray tan should last between 5 to 10 days. Using a good quality moisturiser, body oil, bath oil or tan extender each morning will help to prolong the life of your spray tan.

Avoid chlorinated swimming pools during the life of your spray tan as chlorine will strip the product from your skin. While on holidays this can be hard to avoid! An easy solution is to opt for a Technotan spray tan and then purchase a Technotan ‘spray tan in a can’ which will match your existing spray tan and can be easily applied for touch ups.

Always remember to apply a high spectrum SPF sunscreen because although you may look brown after a spray tan, your skin still burns as fiercely as it normally would.

Sydney Tanning have searched high and low to find only the best products on the market to meet your individual needs. We cater for everyone as we understand that all of our clients are different and while alot prefer a light natural looking tan, some prefer a much darker result. Whichever your preference, you can be assured that our qualified staff will be able to recommend a suitable product.

We have numerous brands and shades of rapid tans which develop and can be washed off after just 1-4hrs depending on the desired result. Rapid tans are brilliant for those people who prefer to wash the solution off after a few hours (as opposed to keeping it on overnight) and last for up to a week. Our most popular products in the rapid tan range are Technotan, Flashtan and Vani-T tan.

In our 8hr range (which means ideally they should be washed off after 8hrs) we stock Technotan, Chevron Tan and Be Tanned- most are available in a variety of shades.

Consumer awareness has resulted in a huge demand for organic products across all industries and it’s not dissimilar with spray tan products. Most of our products are organic and we know you will love them all!

Sydney Tanning are proud to stock only the best and latest products which you would find in most salons around the country. Whichever product you decide on, you can be assured that you will never come out orange or streaky.

To be brown or not to be brown… that is the question!

With the copious amounts of publicly available information on skin cancer these days, it’s hard to find a reason to sunbake or use sunbeds.

I, along with a vast majority of women around the world, confess to once upon a time being a ‘sunny bunny’. This is a supposedly endearing term for a person who loves to spend an excessive, unhealthy amount of time in the sun. Like alot of these women (and originally from a medical background) I knew the risks and dangers associated with exposing my skin to midday sun and solariums but chose to blindly ignore the facts that are so commonly publicised through every possible modality here in Australia, repeatedly telling myself “it won’t happen to me”.

You’re probably thinking this is going to end with a skin cancer scare or similar- but it’s not. Well not that I know of anyway. It seems it’s always when it’s too late that people declare they are converted. Nope, for me the ever-increasing number of freckles and pigmentation along with the dry skin and tiny wrinkles rapidly appearing, were enough for me to realise the sun was permanently (and unnecessarily) damaging my skin. Besides this, I constantly felt like I was on an uphill treadmill trying to maintain my tan.

And then I had my first spray tan. The solarium I frequented several times a week had a new automated spray tan booth- appealling to my ‘tanorexic’ nature, of course I had to try it out for myself. And hey presto, I was browner than I had ever been, it was faster and required less maintenance than any other tanning method I’de tried and dollar for dollar it was cheaper than my weekly solarium visits. Not to mention, it probably saved my life.

Armed with what I know now, I thought I’de compile some basic info on the everyday issues surrounding UV Tanning and Sunless Tanning.

UV v Fake Tanning

The endless debate, in a nutshell:-

Sunless Tanning

Pros

Only takes 5-10mins to apply on skin

No UV exposure so no associated cancer risks

Inexpensive and fast compared to the time and money spent maintaining a tan through the use of sunbeds or solariums

An increase in the popularity of fake tanning over the last few years has lead to ongoing technological advances in fake tan solutions on the market

Most applications will last between 5-10 days and can be easily topped up with another quick coat of spray tan, fake self-tan lotion or by using a spray tan in a can

Temporary so can be easily removed if required and does not affect the deeper layers of the skin (unlike sunbaking and solariums)

Won’t cause pigmentation, freckles or melanoma’s

Doesnt result in wrinkles, damaged and dry skin

Most companies are supplying organic tans and tans that develop in as little as 2hrs

Cons

If not applied properly streaking can occur

Depending on the product and skin tone of the person, some sunless tanning products can still end up looking orange

Can be expensive compared to sunbaking and fake tan lotions bought off the shelf in supermarkets (but not when compared with oncological costs!)

Depending on the product used and condition of the skin, some fake tans can fade patchy

Again depending on the product, some can be sticky and messy while developing however there are alot of ‘rapid’ products on the market now which can be washed off after 1-4hrs

There is limited information available on long term risks involving spray tan solutions, especially if inhaled

I have included an extract from a PDF on the Australian Cancer Council website with a background on their issues surrounding fake tan users and also their recommendations on “UV v Fake Tans”:

Background

1. Cancer Council Australia is concerned that individuals who use fake tan may assume they are protected from UV radiation. A survey conducted by Cancer Council South Australia in 2001 showed fake tan users were more likely to report having been sunburnt more than once over the summer compared with non-users.

2. A telephone survey conducted in NSW in 2003 to assess community attitudes and practices in relation to fake tanning lotions suggests that fake tanning products are not likely to be used as a safer alternative to sun tanning.

3. A further study conducted in NSW in 2006 explored the potential for ‘fake’ tanning products as a substitute for ‘real’ tanning from ultraviolet radiation. The study involved 11 focus groups with female tan seekers and solarium users. This qualitative data confirmed that participants were unlikely to substitute fake tanning products as a safer alternative to either sun or solarium tanning.

Recommendations

1. Cancer Council does not promote the perception that tanned skin is more desirable than pale skin
2. People who have a strong desire to change their skin colour would be safer using a fake tanning product in preference to UV radiation (direct sunlight or solarium)

Users of fake tanning products should continue to protect their skin by:

3. Always protecting their skin when the UV Index is 3 and above;
4. Staying in the shade where possible;
5. Wearing a broad brimmed hat, sun protective clothing and sunglasses; and
7. Using a broad spectrum SPF 30+, water-resistant sunscreen and reapplying every two hours.

Self-Fake Tan Application Techniques

Shave all unwanted hair on the day of application. If waxing, preferrably do this the day before applying your fake tanning lotion.

Exfoliate all skin surfaces using a body scrub, loofah, exfoliating gloves or similar to remove all loose, dead skin cells for a more even tan coverage.

Moisturise all over with body oil or a good quality moisturising lotion, paying special attention to dry areas such as ankles, knees and elbows.

Apply fake tan while wearing latex gloves on hands to avoid staining to fingers and nails. Apply the fake tanning cream in a circular motion to avoid streaking, ensuring that you apply just a small amount to the ankles, knees, elbows and wrists. Remove gloves and using just one finger apply a small amount of fake tan to the backs of the hands.

Allow at least 30 minutes for lotion to absorb into skin before dressing in dark clothing to avoid any rub-off on clothes.

Most fake tan products develop over several hours so do not wash product off before recommended time.

Another coat can be applied after washing off the first coat should you wish to achieve a darker result. Otherwise to maintain an even tan, re-apply once or twice a week, remembering to exfoliate and moisturise before every re-application.

If you would like to add a little muscle definition to your tan, purchase a second bottle of fake tan in a slightly darker shade and blend a tiny amount into the small darker areas where you see muscle definition when you flex your arms, legs and stomach muscles. This type of application works best on triceps, biceps, calves, quadriceps and abdominal muscles.

Always remember to apply a good quality SPF daily, whether going out directly or indirectly in the sun- FAKE TAN PRODUCTS DO NOT PROVIDE PROTECTION FROM THE SUN!

Spray Tans – Before and After Instructions

Beforehand Instructions

Be sure to exfoliate face and body to remove any dead skin cells, paying particular attention to feet and ankles, knees, wrists and elbows to ensure a laster longing tan with an all over even coverage. Ideally shave legs etc.

Do not moisturise and do not use deodorant or apply make-up.

Most people are happy to wear a g-string during their spray tan but it’s a personal choice so it’s fine if you prefer to wear briefs/bra/swimsuit etc.

Whichever your personal preference, we do recommend that you wear dark coloured items to be sprayed in, although permanent clothing stains are relatively uncommon.

Aftercare Instructions

Directly after your spray tan avoid any tight clothing which clings and presses on the skin ie: bra, socks etc.

Avoid any physical exercise, excessive heat and other situations where you are inclined to sweat. Also avoid situations where you may potentially get wet as both of these factors can affect the outcome of your spray tan while it is developing.

In the days following, be sure to use a good quality moisturiser, body oil or tan extender to help prolong the life of your spray tan. It is paramount to keep your skin as moisturised as possible both before and during the length of your spray tan as this not only helps to prolong the life of your tan but also helps to prevent your spray tan cracking and becoming worn in dry areas on the body.

Avoid chlorinated swimming pools where possible after your spray tan. Sometimes this can be unavoidable, especially while on holidays. We recommend purchasing an individual aerosol spray-on tan which will allow you to apply a touch up where required. For a perfect colour match, your spray tan technician may even be able to supply you with the same brand and colour as your spray tan.

I hope this article is helpful to anyone out there confused or otherwise pondering the risks and benefits of UV Tanning versus Sunless Tanning.
